November 13, 2008 Day 2

Welcome to the McKelvey Travels log for Gloria and Charlie's trip to Egypt.  As with all of these adventures, it takes a day or two of travel to get to where we are going!  We left SFO yesterday around 1PM, with a 5 hour flight to NYC.  You are right, travel nowadays isn't what it used to be.  No food, just soda.  As always, Gloria packed lunches for us so we didn't go hungry.  We can usually plan ahead enough to grab an exit row, so leg room isn't bad for reading and dozing.

We had about an hour layover in NYC.  One perk this trip is we finally qualify for access to the airline lounges when we travel internationally.  We have charged enough on our company credit card to quality.  That is a nice perk.  It is quite, secure and a few snacks to munch on.

I am writing this from Heathrow Airport in London.  We had a six hour transatlantic overnight flight, again, more dozing.  I did watch The Dark Knight, whoa, a bit creepy for me. Actually fell asleep before the end, does the Joker get killed?  During the movie it looks like he deserves it!

One travel tip:  go to www.buy.com and buy their $10 noise suppression headphones.  Great whether you are watching a movie, listening to music or just sleeping, it really does cut out all the ambient plane noise.

We have a 4 hour layover here in London, but  no complaints.  We are in the British Airways Lounge, a BIG upgrade from American Airlines Lounge.  Free food and drink!  We plan to graze the entire time!  I am on my laptop, but they have a whole bank of computers for surfing.  Gloria is there now.  Again, very quite and secure, and not surprising, as I listen to a British couple next to me they are discussing McCain vs. Obama.

We will be in Cairo the next couple of days, then an overnight train ride to southern Egypt and Aswan.
